Corvallis (kor-VAL-is), city (1990 pop. 44,757), Benton co., NW Oregon, on the Willamette R., 27 mi/43 km SSW of Salem; 44°34'N 123°16'W. Elev. 224 ft/68 m. RR junction. Engineering firms contribute to the city’s economy. Mfg. (food and beverages, lumber, millwork, chemicals, wood prods., furniture, printing and publishing, construction, computers). Agr. (apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries). Corvallis is the seat of Oregon State Univ. and the hq. for Siuslaw Natl. Forest to SW. William L. Finley Natl. Wildlife Refuge to S; McDonald State Forest to NW. Inc. 1857.
