Ciudad del Carmen (syoo-DAHD del KAHR-men), city (1990 pop. 83,806), Carmen municipio, Campeche, SE Mexico, port on W tip of Carmen Isl., at channel linking Gulf of Campeche with Laguna de Términos, 120 mi/193 km SW of Campeche, on Mexico Highway 180; 18°38'N 91°50'W. Mexico’s most important shrimp port. Agr. (corn, beans, plantains, fruit); trading in and shipping of chicle and timber. Mfg. (fertilizers), sawmilling; works in hides, lizard and shark skins.
