Compostela
 
 
Compostela (kom-po-STAI-lah), city (1990 pop. 15,175) and township, Compostela municipio, Nayarit, W Mexico, in a valley at W end of Transverse Volcanic Axis, 20 mi/31km from the Pacific coast, on RR, and 20 mi/32 km S of Tepic on Mexico Highway 200; 21°14'N 104°52'W. Elev. 1,837 ft/560 m. Mining (silver, gold, copper) and agr. center (corn, tobacco, beans, sugarcane, coffee, rice; pork); tobacco factories. Founded 1535. Has San Jago church, built 1539 of red volcanic stone. Compostela was 1st capital of of Nueva Galicia, early Span. colony.
