Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument (c.2,565 sq mi/4,137 sq km), Kane and Garfield cos., S Utah, c.60 mi/97 km E of Ceddar City, Utah, bounded on S by Arizona. Dixie Natl. Forest to N; Bryce Canyon Natl. Forest to W; Glen Canyon Natl. Recreation Area to E. Drained by Escalante R. Includes Escalante Canyons, Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Grand Staircase (a 7,000-ft/2,100-m incline of red sandstone); also 300 Native Amer. archaeological sites. Est. 1996.
