(often refered to as the carpet capital of the world). Its large tufted-textile industry was begun in the late 1800s and still remains important. Mfg. also includes printing and publishing, food, and concrete. In the Civil War, Dalton (Confederate hq. after the Chattanooga campaign) fell to Gen. Sherman in the Atlanta campaign (1864). Dalton Col., a 2-year institution of the Univ. System of Ga. located here. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga Natl. Military Park is nearby, as is a state park. Inc. 1847.
