Cananea
 
 
Cananea (kah-nah-NAI-ah), city (1990 pop. 24,967) and township, Cananea municipio, Sonora, NW Mexico, in spur of Sierra Madre Occidental, on RR , and 45 mi/72 km ESE of Nogales, Ariz., on Mexico Hwy 2; 30°58'N 110°18'W. Elev. 4,885 ft/1,489 m. One of the world’s leading copper-mining centers; copper smelting. Also silver, lead, zinc, and gold deposits. Cattle raising. Has large U.S.-origin pop.
