Greensboro
 
 
Greensboro, city (1990 pop. 183,521), Guilford co., N central N.C., 25 mi/40 km E of Winston-Salem; 36°04'N 79°49'W. The city has an important textile industry and foundries and is a financial, insurance, and distribution center for the region. Mfg. (motor vehicle parts, electronic and telecommunications equip., food and beverages, printing and publishing, apparel and textiles, plastic, paper, and lumber prods., steel fabrication, pharmaceuticals, crushed granite, chemicals, machinery). Among its educational institutions are the Univ. of N.C. at Greensboro, Greensboro Col., Guilford Col. (to W), N.C. Agr. and Technical State Univ., and Bennett Col. N.C. Dolley Madison, O. Henry, and Edward R. Murrow were born in Greensboro. Greensboro Historic Mus., Natl. Science Center, Zane Planetarium. Colonial Heritage Center to NW. Greensboro was settled in 1749. Inc. 1829.
