Albemarle
 
 
Albemarle (AL-buh-marl), county (739 sq mi/1,914 sq km; 1990 pop. 68,040), N central Va.; Charlottesville (independent of co.); 38°01'N 78°33'W. W part is in the Piedmont and rises to the Blue Ridge (W); bounded SW in part by Rockfish R., S by James R.; drained by Rivanna R. and Hardware R. Agr. (wheat, apples, peaches, corn, hay, alfalfa); cattle, sheep, horses, poultry; dairying; timber. Limestone, soapstone. Includes part of Shenandoah Natl. Park in NW; Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge (Natl.) Parkway follow W boundary, the latter becoming Skyline Drive in Shenandoah Park. Known for historic estates (notably Monticello and Ash Lawn); Univ. of Va. at Charlottesville. Formed 1774.
