Greenport
 
 
Greenport, summer recreational village (1 sq mi/2.6 sq km; 1990 pop. 2,070) in Greenport town (1990 pop. 4,101), Suffolk co., SE N.Y., on N fluke of E L.I., 20 mi/32 km NE of Riverhead; 41°06'N 72°22'W. Mfg. of textiles; boat repair; fisheries (esp. oysters). By 1840 pursuit of offshore whaling, practiced by both Native Americans and Eur. residents, had turned into a way of industry with ships leaving Cold Springs Harbor, Sag Harbor, and Greenport on 3-year whaling voyages. A terminus of L.I. RR. Greenport Village Historic Dist. Inc. 1838.
