Americus, city (1990 pop. 16,512), seat of Sumter co., SW Ga.; inc. 1855; 32°04'N 84°14'W. Mfg. (polyurethane foam, furniture, fertilizer, clothing and fabrics, food, consumer prods., construction materials, and automotive trim); agr. includes a livestock market, crops (peanuts, corn, cotton), and minerals (kaolin and bauxite); 32°04'N 84°13'W. Charles Lindbergh made his first solo flight from Souther Field there. Georgia Southwestern Col. is in Americus. Nearby is Andersonville, as well as Plains, the home of Jimmy Carter.
