Cortland, county (501 sq mi/1,298 sq km; 1990 pop. 48,963), central N.Y.; Cortland; 42°36'N 76°04'W. Dairying and farming area (cabbage and sweet corn); sheep and lambs, hogs, pigs, and poultry; maple sugar. Diversified mfg., esp. at Cortland, despite recent loss of several major employers. Drained by Tioughnioga R. Several major ski centers are in the area. Formed 1808.
