Berlin (BUHR-lin), city (1990 pop. 11,824), Coos co., NE N.H., 85 mi/137 km NNE of Concord, and N of the White Mts., at falls of the Androscoggin R.; 44°29'N 71°15'W. Boundaries extend W into White Mt. Natl. Forest. Nursery crops, vegetables, apples; cattle, poultry; dairying; timber. Mfg. (steel fabrication; fabricated metal prods., bottled water, bldg. materials, electronics, lumber, pulp, paper). In a heavily forested region, it early became the site of pulp and paper mills. Seat of N.H. Technical Col. (Berlin campus). Center of Nor. settlement. Has the 1st ski club organized (1872) in the U.S. Milan Hill State Park to NW; Moose Brook State Park to S; Berlin Fish Hatchery 8 mi/12.9 km to W; Mahoosuc Range to SE; Nansen Wayside State Park at N end of city.
