Glenwood Springs, town (1990 pop. 6,561), Garfield co., W central Colo., on Colorado R., at mouth of Roaring Fork R., N of Elk Mts., and 75 mi/121 km NE of Grand Junction; 39°32'N 107°19'W. Elev. 5,746 ft/1,751 m. Light mfg. Resort, with hot mineral springs; hq. of White R. Natl. Forest (parts of forest to N and S). Potatoes, cattle, sheep, hay, oats. Oil-shale deposits in vicinity. Hydroelectric plant just NE receives water from dam and diversion tunnel on Colorado R.; supplies power to Denver. To E scenic Glenwood Canyon, 1,000 ft/305 m deep in places, extending 15 mi/24 km along Colorado R. Colorado Mountain Col. here. Sunrise Ski Resort to S. City laid out 1883, inc. 1885.
