Charenton (SHER-in-tuhn), uninc. town (1990 pop. 1,534), St. Mary parish, La., 7 mi/11 km NW of Franklin; 29°52'N 91°31'W. Drainage and navigation canal; oil and gas field nearby. Chitimachae (the only Indian tribe native to S La.) Reservation. Originally known as Indian Bend, it was named for Charenton, France.
