Cortez (kor-TEZ), town (1990 pop. 7,284), Montezuma co., SW Colo., 40 mi/64 km W of Durango; 37°21'N 108°34'W. Elev. 6,201 ft/1,890 m. Trade center in peaches, grain, sheep, cattle region; timber. Mfg. (concrete, meat processing, flour, Indian pottery). Hoverweep Natl. Monument to W; McPher Reservoir to N; Mesa Verde Natl. Park and Yucca House Natl. Monument to SE; Ute Mountain Indian Reservation to S. County airport to SW. Founded 1887, inc. 1902.
