Apalachicola (ap-pah-lach-i-KO-LAH), city (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km; 1990 pop. 2,602), Franklin co., NW Fla., c.65 mi/105 km SW of Tallahassee, on Apalachicola Bay (bridged here), at mouth of Apalachicola R.; 29°43'N 84°59'W. Port of entry and fishing center (oysters, shrimp); exports lumber, naval stores, crushed oyster shells; mfg. of fish meal and oil, seafood canning. Civil War blockade ended city’s position as a leading cotton-shipping port after 1830. Monument here commemorates J. W. Gorrie, who invented ice-making process (1845). Founded c.1820, inc. 1838.
