Apostle Islands
 
 
Apostle Islands, group of more than 20 wooded isls., in L. Superior, off N Wis. Madeline, 13 mi/21 km long, is the largest isl. and has the group’s only settlement, La Pointe, at W end. Noted for wave-eroded sandstone cliffs and abundant wildlife, the isls. are visited by tourists and hunters. Of the isls., all but Madeline, along with an 11 mi/18 km strip of the adjacent shoreline, make up Apostle Isls. Natl. Lakeshore. Madeline Isl.: part of Bad River Indian Reservation at E end; Big Bay State Park on S shore. Airport at La Pointe. Ferry from Bayfield. Raspberry, Sand, and York isls. and Bayfield Peninsula in Bayfield co., other isls. in Ashland co.
