Cedar City, city (1990 pop. 13,443), Iron co., SW Utah, just W of Markagunt Plateau and Cedar Canyon, just NE of Kolob Terrace, 45 mi/72 km NE of St. George, 220 mi/354 km SSW of Salt Lake City; 37°41'N 113°04'W. Elev. 5,834 ft/1,778 m. Home of Southern Utah Univ. and trade center for livestock and agr. area; barley, alfalfa; dairying; sheep, cattle; mfg. (plaster, wool prods., fuel, consumer goods, lumber). Sawmill and coal and iron mines, are nearby. RR terminus; junction of RR spur to Iron Mountain to NW. Sections of Dixie Natl. Forest (hunting and fishing) are E and SW, including Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area (E); Cedar Breaks Natl. Monument (E). Columbia Iron Mine to W; Iron Mission State Historical Park to N. Settled 1851, 1st iron smelter W of Miss. R.; inc. 1868.
