Grand Rapids, city (1990 pop. 189,126), Kent co., SW central Mich., 55 mi WNW of Lansing, on the Grand R.; 42°57'N 85°39'W. The 2d largest city in the state, it is a RR junction, distribution (consumer prods.), wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy prods., farm produce, gypsum, and gravel. Furniture mfg. (begun in 1859) remains an important industry. Among the citys other manufactures are appliances, electronic equip., automotive parts, aircraft and space navigation systems, and paper prod. Kent County Internatl. Airport to SE. It has an art gallery, the Gerald R. Ford Mus., a furniture mus., a planetarium, and a symphony orchestra. Also in Grand Rapids are Aquinas Col., Calvin Col. and Seminary, G.R. Baptist Col. and Seminary, a business col., and a school of design.
