Berkshire
 
 
Berkshire (BUHRK-shir), county (946 sq mi/2,450 sq km; 1990 pop. 139,352), W Mass., bordering Vt., N.Y., and Conn.; Pittsfield; 42°22'N 73°13'W. Embraces most of the Berkshire Hills; popular summer and winter resort area, with mfg. towns. Textile prods., paper mills, plastics prods., metal prods., industrial machinery, search and navigation equip., electronic capacitors. Livestock; hay, fruit, nursery prods.; dairying. Mt. Greylock (3,491 ft/1,064 m), highest point in Mass., is near North Adams. Rivers include Housatonic, Hoosic, and Farmington. In N, Hoosac RR Tunnel pierces the Hoosac Range. Appalachian Trail traverses co. (N-S). Formed 1761.
