Childress, county (713 sq mi/1,847 sq km; 1990 pop. 5,953), extreme N Texas, in SE Panhandle; Childress; 34°32'N 100°12'W. In rolling prairies; drained by Prairie Dog Town Fork of Red R. (continues as Red R. and as Texas-Okla. state line to E). Agr. (cotton, wheat, grain sorghum, melons, peanuts; goats, ostriches). L. Childress and Baylor L. in W. Formed 1876. Acquired part of Harmon co. (Okla.) in relocation of 100th meridian (1930).
