| Fort Yukon, village (1990 pop. 580), NE Alaska, on Yukon R. at mouth of Porcupine R., and 140 mi/225 km NE of Fairbanks, on the Yukon Flats, just N of Arctic Circle; 66°34'N 145°18'W. Fur-trading center and supply base for trappers. Has hosp., schools, airfield. A post est. here 1847 by Hudsons Bay Company, in agreement with Russians, was moved to Old Rampart House and later to British territory, after U.S. purchase of Alaska. |
