Croton River, SE N.Y.; rises in S Dutchess co. in West, Middle, and East branches, which flow S through Putnam co. to join near Westchester co. line; combined stream continues SW to Hudson R. at Croton Point. New Croton Dam (2,168 ft/661 m long, c.297 ft/91 m high; completed 1905 to replace earlier structure), 3 mi/4.8 km above mouth, impounds Croton L. (c.20 mi/32 km long). Lakes waters, with those of West Branch, Middle Branch, East Branch, Croton Falls, Titicus, Cross R., Amawalk, and Bog Brook reservoirs (and others in rivers watershed), are carried to N.Y. city by Croton Aqueduct.
