Cayman Islands (100 sq mi/259 sq km; 1989 pop. 25,355), Br. crown colony, comprising 3 isls. in the West Indies. George Town, the and chief port, is on Grand Cayman; the other isls. are Little Cayman and Cayman Brac; 19°30'N 80°40'W. Finance and tourism are the economic mainstays of the Cayman Islands. The isls. are notable as an offshore banking center; since the 1970s tourism has increased substantially. The isls. were sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503.
