Golden, city (1990 pop. 13,116), Jefferson co., N central Colo., on Clear Creek, just E of Front Range, a suburb 10 mi/16 km W of downtown Denver; 39°44'N 105°13'W. Elev. 5,674 ft/1,729 m. Resort and trading point in livestock and poultry region; mfg. (structural ceramics, medical equip., rock prods., radio and television software, beer, biological services). Coal and gold mines in vicinity. Colo. School of Mines here. Camp George West Military Reserve to NE. County fairgrounds to SE; Red Rocks Natural Amphitheater to S. Goden Gate State Park to NW. Grave of William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) on Lookout Mt. to SW. City founded 1859 as mining town, served as territorial capital of 1862–1867, inc. 1886.
