Fayetteville (FAI-uht-vuhl), city (1990 pop. 42,099), Washington co., NW Ark., in the Ozarks, 45 mi/72 km NNE of Fort Smith; 36°04'N 94°09'W. It is a farm trade and agr. center with canneries and food processing. Mfg. (concrete, machinery, electronic equip., prepared food, transportation equip., dairy prods., apparel, lumber, printing, paper prods.). The Univ. of Ark. is here and maintains an agr. experimental farm here. Several battles occurred in the area during the Civil War, including at Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. Tourism, recreation area. Beaver L. reservoir to NW; Ozark Natl. Forest to W and S; Devil’s Den State Park to S; Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park to SW. Core of Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers metropolitan areas, one of country’s fastest growing areas. Inc. 1836.
