Granite City (1990 pop. 32,862), Madison co., SW Ill., an industrial suburb of St. Louis, on the Mississippi; 38°42'N 90°07'W. It has port and RR connections. Some metal prods. are manufactured; however, the suburb has been affected by the surrounding cities and area, which have become highly depressed economically due to declining industries. Lies next to Chain of Rocks Canal, a Mississippi R. bypass. Inc. 1896.
