Corsicana
 
 
Corsicana, city (1990 pop. 22,911), Navarro co., E central Texas, 48 mi/77 km SSE of Dallas; 32°04'N 96°27'W. Elev. 411 ft/125 m. The city is an oil center; other mfg. (glass and rubber prods., clothing, electronics, paper prods., livestock equipment). Cotton, small grains, and cattle and emus grown/raised in the surrounding rich blackland farm area. The discovery of oil when a city water well was being dug (1894) led to the drilling (1895) of the first commercial oil well W of the Mississippi. This site has been preserved as Petroleum Park. Mobil Oil originated in Corsicana as Magnolia Oil with the construction of the first oil refinery in Texas built 1897. The refinery was the first of its kind in the West. Corsicana is home to Navarro Col. (2 year) and to Pioneer Village, a complex of 7 restored log structures. Inc. 1848.
