Grand Manan
 
 
Grand Manan (muh-NAN), island c.16 mi/26 km long and c.7 mi/11 km wide, S N.B., Canada, in the Bay of Fundy. On the N and W sides are bold cliffs, rising from 200 ft/61 m to 400 ft/122 m high, visible from the Maine coast. The principal villages and harbors, North Head, Grand Harbor, and Seal Cove, are on the S and E sides. The chief occupation is fishing, and the isl. is a summer resort. It was settled after the Amer. Revolution by Loyalists; Brit. possession was disputed by the U.S. until 1817.
