Albany
 
 
Albany (AWL-buh-nee), county (531 sq mi/1,375 sq km; 1990 pop. 292,594), E N.Y.; Albany; 42°36'N 73°58'W. Bounded on E by the Hudson and partly on N by Mohawk R. and the N.Y. State Barge Canal. Includes the Helderbergs and part of the Catskills (resorts). Dairying, farming (hay, vegetables, horticultural crops); cattle and calves, lamb and sheep raising. Extensive mfg. at Albany, Watervliet, Cohoes (ranks 3rd in the state in numbers employed in mfg). Formed 1683; named in honor of James Stuart, Duke of York and Albany.
