| Fort Washington Park, Md., 9 mi/14.5 km SSE of Washington, D.C.; 38°43'N 77°02'W. The first fortification built for the defense of the capital was constructed here in 1809. Destroyed in the War of 1812, it was rebuilt in 1824. National park authorized 1930. |
