Frontera (fron-TER-ah), city (1990 pop. 16,269) and township, Centla township, Tabasco, SE Mexico, port at mouth of Grijalva R., 6 mi/9.7 km inland from the Gulf of Campeche, 40 mi/64 km NNE of Villahermosa, on Mexico Highway 180; 18°32'N 92°39'W. A cargo and fishing port. Trading, processing, and agr. center (sugar, tobacco, corn, coconut, rice, beans, cacao, bananas; livestock; timber). Tanning, sawmilling, vegetable oil pressing; mfg. of soap, footwear. Exports fruit, wood. Formerly Álvaro Obregón.
