Comitán de Domínguez (ko-mee-TAHN de do-MEEN-ges), city (1990 pop. 48,299) and township, Chiapas, S Mexico, in Sierra Madre, near Guatemala border, 45 mi/72 km SE of San Cristóbal de las Casas on Inter-American Highway 190; 16°18'N 92°09'W. A substantial Tojolabal Maya pop. lives in the rural areas. Trading, processing, and agr. center (lemons, corn, cotton sugarcane; livestock); alcohol and liquor distilling; textile milling. Has colonial churches. Frequently Comitán.
