Apizaco (ah-pee-SAH-ko), city (1990 pop. 43,663) and township, Tlaxcala, central Mexico, in Tlaxcala Basin, 25 mi/40 km N of Puebla; 19°24'N 98°08'W. Elev. 7,900 ft/2,408 m. RR and highway junction. Agr. center (corn, wheat, barley, maguey, alfalfa, beans; livestock); pulque distilling, tanning, flour milling, mfg. of ceramics; iron foundry. Formerly Barrón Escandón.
