Fort Simpson
 
 
Fort Simpson, village (1991 pop. 1,142), SW Mackenzie dist., N.W.T., Canada, on small isl. in Mackenzie R., at mouth of Liard R.; 61°52'N 121°21'W. River port; on Mackenzie Highway. Trapping, fishing. Trading post; site of agr. experiment station, Anglican and R.C. missions and schools; airfield; govt. radio, TV, and meteorological stations; hosp.; Royal Can. Mounted Police post. Oats, potatoes, barley, beets, vegetables are grown in vicinity. Founded 1804 by North West Company and named Fort of the Forks, it was renamed 1821, after being taken over by Hudson’s Bay Company. Scheduled air service. Outfitting for Nahanni Natl. Park.
