| Fort Vermilion (vuhr-MIL-yuhn), village, N Alta., Canada, on Peace R., and 170 mi/274 km W of L. Athabaska; 58°24'N 116°00'W. Northernmost wheat producing area. Fort Vermilion wheat took 1st prize at Chicago Worlds Fair 1893. Trading post. Established on nearby site in 1798, it was taken over (1821) by Hudsons Bay Company; later removed to present site. Vermilion Falls (25 ft/8 m high) on Peace R. are 40 mi/64 km E. |
