Cochiti (KO- chi-tee), pueblo (35 sq mi/91 sq km; 1990 pop. 434), Sandoval co., N central N.Mex; on W bank of the Rio Grande and 23 mi/37 km WSW of Santa Fe in Santo Domingo Indian Reservation; 35°36'N 106°20'W. Elev. 5,236 ft/1,596 m. Pueblo Indians here make pottery and raise livestock and corn. Festival of San Buenaventura, patron saint, takes place in July in connection with rain dance. San Buenaventura de Cochití Mission dates from 17th cent. Village named by Juan de Oñate in 1598 after hearing kotyete, which means stone kiva.
