Cochise
 
 
Cochise (co-CHEES), county (6,219 sq mi/16,107 sq km; 1990 pop. 97,624), SE Ariz.; Bisbee; 31°53'N 109°44'W. Bounded by N.Mex., on E, and Mex. (Sonora state) on S. Copper mined near Warren and Bisbee, in SW. Silver, gold, gypsum. Irrigated farming along San Pedro R. and San Simon Creek (cotton, alfalfa, hay, wheat, corn, sorghum, lettuce; cattle, hogs); mfg. at Sierra Vista and Douglas. Chief ranges are Chiricahua, Dos Cabezas, Dragoon, and Mule mts. Includes Chiricahua Natl. Monument and Fort Bowie Natl. Historic Site in E and several parts of Coronado Natl. Forest scattered throughout co. Coronado Natl. Monument and San Pedro Riparian Natl. Conservation Area in SW; historic town of Tombstone and Tombstone Courthouse State Historical Park in W center. Fort Huachuca, important in economy, very close to Sierra Vista urban area in SW. Formed 1881.
