Coatepec (ko-AH-te-pek), city (1990 pop. 36,692) and township, Coatepec municipio, Veracruz, E Mexico, at E foot of Cofre de Perote, in Sierra Madre Oriental, 5 mi/8 km SSW of Xalapa Enríquez; 19°27'N 96°57'W. Elev. 4,108 ft/1,252 m. RR junction. Center for agr. (corn, sugarcane, coffee, oranges) and processing (sugar refining, coffee roasting, alcohol distilling, wine making; textile milling). Picturesque Indian town in densely forested area; famed for orchids.
