Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument
 
 
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument (32 sq mi/83 sq km), Montrose co., W Colo. Deep, narrow canyon of the Gunnison R., named for its dark-colored walls, which are always in shadow. The natl. monument includes 12 mi/19 km of the deepest sect. of the gorge. Main entrance from S, from Montrose; N entrance from Crawford, roads not connected. Wilderness designation, 1976. Authorized 1933.
