| Fort Stewart Military Reservation (463 sq mi/1,199 sq km), SE Ga., just W of Savannah and just N of Hinesville; home of the Third Infantry; has 2,000 bldgs. and over 15,000 active duty personnel with 24,099 dependents; employs 3,356 civilian workers. Est. 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for anti-aircraft training. It is the largest army base E of the Mississippi R. and played an important role during the Persian Gulf War. |
