Early in the first millennium, Austronesian seafarers brought people, language, and culture to the island that was already part of an inter-regional Indian Ocean trade network for timber, gum, and aromatics. Very little is known about the early history of this region, although it was the site of important ethnic, agronomic, and cultural exchanges with Indian Ocean neighbors.
