The first general election gave an absolute majority to the anticommunist Smallholders' Party, whose leader, Zoltan Tildy, formed a coalition cabinet. The Communists gained the Interior and Justice Ministries and thus controlled the secret police.
The economic situation of the country was desperate as a result of the war, with serious food shortages and an unprecedented currency inflation. Large-scale Soviet requisitions further aggravated the situation.
