The expression, like “It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees” (said in the same broadcast; see Ibarurri on revolutionaries), became a slogan in the ensuing civil war. Previous attributions for this rallying cry include Marshal Pétain (1856-1951) during World War I: Ils ne passeront pas.
