ATTRIBUTION:Dominique Aury [Pauline Reage] (b. 1908), French journalist. As quoted in the New Yorker, p. 43 (August 1, 1994).

On why, more than forty years earlier, she had written The Story of O, a sadomasochistic, pornographic romance, for her lover Jean Paulhan. A renowned intellectual more than twenty years her senior, he had arranged for its publication under the pseudonym Pauline Reage.
