Krusenstern, Adam Johann von

(ä´däm y´hän fn kr´znshtrn) (KEY) , 1770–1846, Russian navigator. From 1803 to 1806 he circumnavigated the globe. Although the voyage was undertaken to stimulate the fur trade of the Pacific coast and to revive trade with China and Japan, its real contribution was to the knowledge of the hydrography of the N Pacific coast of America. Krusenstern was director (1827–42) of the royal naval academy and was promoted to the rank of admiral. He wrote an account of his voyage (3 vol. and atlas, 1809–13; tr. 1813).
