Ivan V

166696, czar of Russia (168296), son of Czar Alexis by his first wife. Ivan was mentally retarded, and on the death of his elder brother, Feodor III, his succession was opposed by the supporters of his half brother, Peter I (Peter the Great). However, Ivan and Peter jointly succeeded under the regency of Ivans sister Sophia Alekseyevna. After the overthrow (1689) of Sophias regency, Ivan was excluded from state affairs and Peter assumed control. Ivans elder daughter, Catherine, was the grandmother of Ivan VI; his younger daughter, Anna, became czarina of Russia in 1730.
