| Commentate, a back-formation from commentator, is normally used to mean to serve as a commentator: The retired tennis pro has agreed to commentate on the upcoming match. It is sometimes used transitively to mean to make a running commentary on, as in She commentated the tennis match. In an earlier survey, a majority of the Usage Panel found this transitive usage to be unacceptable. | 1 |
