PRONUNCIATION:  bûrg
NOUN:1. Informal A city or town: “There are no more opportunities for you in this burg” (Damon Runyon). 2. A fortified or walled town in early or medieval Europe.
ETYMOLOGY:Probably from -burg in place names such as Harrisburg, from Middle English burgh, town, from Old English burg. Sense 2, ultimately from Germanic *burgs, hill fort. See bhergh-2 in Appendix I.
