By George Herbert (1593–1633)

Easter

AWAKE, 1 sad heart, whom sorrow ever drowns;
  Take up thine eyes, which feed on earth;
Unfold thy forehead gathered into frowns:
  Thy Saviour comes, and with Him mirth:
                Awake, awake;        5
And with a thankful heart his comforts take!

    I got me flowers to straw Thy way;
      I got me boughs off many a tree:
    But Thou wast up by break of day,
      And brought’st Thy sweets along with Thee.        10

Note 1. Of these two verses, the first is taken from “The Dawning,” the latter from “Easter.” [back]
